Benefits of Our 14 Probiotic Strains:

Each bacterial strain part of our collection was isolated, identified and purified after one-time collection either from meconium, placenta or a healthy human subject. The strains were obtained two decades ago and have been naturally replicating in the laboratory ever since, periodically undergoing numerous tests to assure the bacteria are healthy and maintain their positive characteristics.

Each strain part of our collection has proven health benefits and well established safety. They are classified biologically without transmissible genes and rigorously checked and analyzed for their identity, purity and viability.

Lactobacillus rhamnosus NV-A191

L. rhamnosus A191 is located on the gastrointestinal mucosa starting from the mouth in healthy individuals. It is also found in the urinary tract and the vagina in women. Its strong adherence to the epithelial cells in the intestine enables it to compete efficiently against pathogens, maintaining a strong intestinal barrier. Its benefits include:

  • Down regulation of the inflammatory responses
  • Important decrease in the duration of diarrhea
  • Aid in dairy product digestion for the lactose intolerant, providing some enzymes necessary for the process
  • Promotion and maintain of overall digestive tract health

Lactobacillus plantarum NV-A139

L. plantarum A139 was first isolated from human saliva, but is also found in the intestinal mucosa of humans. It is a strong competitor for harmful bacteria. With all the room and food already taken, pathogens have no choice to pass right through the body, unable to attach themselves and grow. Its effects on health are numerous, and are still being explored in research to this day:

  • Effective as a treatment for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Chrohn’s disease, and colitis
  • Preserves critical nutrients, vitamins, and antioxydants
  • Shown to be one of very few bacteria able to produce L-Lysin, a vital amino acid
  • Shown to be highly effective against soy based allergies in more recent studies

It is a highly beneficial transient bacteria generally lacking in people consuming a standard Western diet while universally present in people consuming traditional plant-based diets.

Lactobacillus rhamnosus NV-A119

Much like its counterpart L. rhamnosus A191, this strain is located in the gastrointestinal tract. Its effects, although similar, have a particular focus on the promotion of the natural immunity in the intestinal mucosa. In synergy with other strains, it ensures tilting the balance in favour of probiotic strains impeding the progress of pathogenic bacteria and eliminating them solely through the body’s own defense system. Its action is primarily in 2 steps:

  • Increase in the production of antibodies targeted at dangerous bacteria
  • Help in the process of phagocytosis, which allows human cells to digest and eliminate foreign bodies

Bifidobacterium breve NV-A053

B. breve A053 is present in both the digestive tract and the vagina, where it has 2 important effects. In the digestive tract, it contributes to fermenting sugars and produces lactic acid and acetic acid, which both have antibacterial properties against many pathogens. In the vagina, it inhibits the growth of Candida albicans, the primary cause of yeast infections. Other benefits include:

  • Inhibition of E. coli
  • Superior ability to break down many types of food, even plant fibers that are normally considered non-digestible
  • Increased production of mucin and epithelial cells contributing to a strong barrier against pathogens, inhibiting translocation through the intestinal wall

Shortage of B. breve has been linked to ailments such as antibiotic-associated diarrhea, allergies, gas, and irritable bowel syndrome. Studies are helping to comprehend the many still undiscovered ways this strain contributes to our health.

Lactobacillus paracasei NV-A234

L. paracasei A234 is commonly found in the mucosal lining of healthy individuals, where it contributes to maintaining the intestinal acidity at healthy levels. The many benefits of the strain include:

  • Strong opposition against Salmonella enterica, a serious human pathogen, and Helicobacter pylori, responsible for painful ulcers, both commonly found in the gastrointestinal tract
  • Inhibition of Candida albicans
  • Reduction of intestinal inflammation.
  • Help for patients with mild ulcerative colitis and diverticular disease.

This strain presents a strong synergy with L. rhamnosus A191 & A119, present in our probiotics formulations. Their combined effects and properties enable them to resist very low pH, and have long lasting effects within the human body.

Lactobacillus casei NV-A180

This strain is found naturally both within the mouth and the intestines of healthy individuals. Studies have shown it to have strong anti-inflammatory effects; this goes against pro-inflammatory pathogens, such as E.coli. E. coli has important impacts on Crohn’s disease, which L. casei can serve to counteract. It will also:

  • Relieve occasional diarrhea or constipation, including those caused by antibiotics
  • Promote bowel regularity
  • Strengthen the immune system via an increase in antibody producing cells and promotion of the body’s innate immunity
  • Promote the balance of the intestinal microflora
  • Inhibit many pathogen, including Salmonella typhimurium, Listeria monocytogenes, and Helicobacter pylori

Along with Bifidobacterium strains present in our formulations, this strain is a powerful agent against ulcers caused by pathogenic bacteria.

Lactobacillus acidophilus NV-A116

Lactoacillus acidophilus A116 is located in the mouth, intestine, and vaginas. It is a very potent strain, and as such is the target of many studies. Such studies have shown L. acidophilus to:

  • Assist in the breakdown of foods and thereby producing hydrogen peroxide, lactic acid and other similar substances. These substances raise the acidity level within the intestine, creating a hostile environment for potential pathogens that can’t resist it
  • Assist in the production of key enzymes such as lactase, alleviating the burden for people suffering from lactose intolerance
  • Increase the rate at which vitamins are absorbed. Some of the nutrients best absorbed with L. acidophilus are the vitamins K and B, calcium and fatty acids
  • Counteract many of the negative side effects resulting from necessary antibiotics therapy.

Lactobacillus acidophilus hydrolyzes milk caseins using extracellular proteinases, yielding amino acids and peptides that stimulate the growth of Bifidobacteria & Propionibacteria, other probiotic strains present in the NOVA formulation, enabling a synergistic balance within the microflora and an impossible environment for pathogenic microorganisms.

Bifidobacterium animalis subp. lactis NV-A051

This strain shares many of its characteristics with the rest of the genus Bifidobacterium. However, it is a particularly strong competitor for hostile bacteria and can protect the body from harm by directly and indirectly competing and inhibiting the effects of bacterial pathogens:

  • Nitrite is a cancer-causing substance, that can be produced by many pathogens by converting nitrates which enter our body naturally through food and water. The strain goes directly against such bacteria by way of a strong competition
  • It competes with many other types of harmful bacteria by having a strong adherence to the intestine and surviving the extreme conditions found within the body with ease
  • Growth of L. acidophilus can also be enhanced by the presence of B. animalis. Both together form a powerful symbiosis able to fight against pathogens

Propionibacterium feudenreichii NV-A420

Proprionibacterium freudenreichii A420 is the only bacteria of its genus to have a mutual relationship with the human intestinal environment, helping our body maintain itself by cleansing the gastrointestinal tract. Other advantages include:

  • Recent evidence showing a lowered risk of colon cancer in people with a good amount of the bacteria within their microflora
  • Production of components that enhance the growth of bifidobacteria, and as such contributing to increasing the defense against a multitude of pathogens
  • It is a rare case of a lactic acid bacteria that is also able to break down lipids

Lactobacillus reuteri NV-A235

L. reuteri A235 is found naturally within the human body, but is not present in everyone’s organism. One of the most promising strains, as well as one of the most well established, it is able to:

  • Produce natural reuterin, a component that attacks pathogens and destroys them directly
  • Single handedly promote an increased number of probiotics bacteria tilting the microflora’s balance against pathogenic microorganisms like E. coli and towards positive helpful ones
  • Significantly reduce risks of diarrhea, as well as reducing the duration of all gut illnesses, colic and ulcers alike

To maintain a high levels of this strain, good supplementation is required. Its effects have been well established for quite some time, and it has been shown, especially in children, that the bigger dosage is consumed, the bigger the effects will be.

Bifidobacterium longum subsp. longum NV-A027

Found in the intestines, this strain can contribute to the healing of damaged mucosa. It has powerful anti-bacterial properties against a multitude of pathogens including but not limited to enterohemorrhagic E. coli which it can displace from the intestinal wall, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Clostridium difficile, Klebsiellia pneumoniae… It can also:

  • Assist the body in maintaining a healthy balance of intestinal flora by producing organic compounds—such as lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, and acetic acid—that increase the acidity of the intestine and inhibit the reproduction of harmful bacteria
  • Boost the immune system
  • Help lower cholesterol levels
  • Prevent diarrhea in antibiotics-treated patients
  • Alleviate lactose intolerance symptoms
  • Inhibit colon and liver tumors and to a lesser extent mammary tumors

In symbiosis with the prebiotic inulin also found in the NOVA probiotics formulation, this strain has been shown to be a very efficient treatment for ulcerative colitis. Many studies are still being performed showing even more positive effects of the strain, including a potential reduction of stress and anxiety in human patients.

Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis NV-A041

This particular strain is found in the intestines of both infants and adults, as well as the vagina. It is especially concentrated in the large intestine, especially in infants, where it operates with a myriad of effects:

  • Strongly reduces intestinal inflammation
  • Represents a safe and effective for the treatment of IBS
  • Relieves occasional diarrhea or constipation, especially if induced by antibiotics
  • Promotes bowel regularity

Its effects also extend to direct attacks against microbial pathogens, such as enterohemorrhagic E. coli – or EHEC – a deadly producer of Shiga toxin causing internal bleeding, or Helicobacter pylori, which causes ulcers. Inhibiting the adherence of pathogens to human intestinal cells it prevents dangerous and life threatening infections.

Bifidobacterium bifidum NV-A020

Present in 95% of healthy adult, it is prevalent in healthy breastfed newborns. Though the number of organisms decreases overtime, this strain alone represents around 25% of a healthy adult’s flora. It is especially prevalent in breast milk.

Prenatal and postnatal supplementation is an effective approach in preventing the development of eczema in infants at high risk of allergy during the first year of life. Its effects on infants also include efficient protection against antibiotic or virus based diarrhea. Even on adults, effects include:

  • Inhibition of the binding of pathogenic E. coli strains to intestinal cells, as well as numerous other pathogens
  • Reduction of the incidence of cold and flu
  • Inhibition of yeast overgrowths
  • Improvements of IBS symptoms, alleviating the burden on the quality of life
  • A positive regulation of the immune system via the intestinal wall, where 70% of the body’s immune cells are located
  • Strong downregulation of inflammation.

Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus NV-A160

Possibly the most typical strain of probiotics, this strain, located in the intestines is thought to be the reason for a higher life expectancy for Bulgarians due to their consumption of fermented yogurts. It has many virtues, including:

  • A proven ability to draw away toxins and defeat harmful bacteria, while colonizing the intestinal mucosa in a beneficial symbiosis with other bacteria of its own genus and others
  • Great improvements to digestion
  • Reduction of cholesterol
