What is Ulcerative Colitis?
Not to be mistaken with Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis is a chronic disease that affects the inner tissue of the large bowel, better known as the colon. It usually begins at the rectum, then extends to the upper regions. If the disease can’t be controlled with medication, then the removal of the intestine is the common “cure”. This might seem like a drastic procedure, but people with UC may suffer from severe bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain and cramping, vomiting, nausea, decreased appetite, weight loss, fever, amnesia, loss of body fluids, and the most common symptom, false urges to fill the john.
Probiotics: Raw gut tug war
More and more people with ulcerative colitis opt for the use of probiotics, these “friendly” bacteria balance the gut flora, the key to optimal health. What causes UC and other inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) remains a mystery therefore finding effective treatment is an on going challenge.
But researchers now know that probiotic bacteria influence the immune cells’ activity, and the ones that web the intestines. Probiotics are known to shield intestinal walls, preventing the disease-causing bacteria from clinging to the bowel tissue. Evidence also shows that chemical factors creating inflammation are placed under bacterial control. Northwestern University Freinburg School of Medicine researchers took out a gene in the probiotic strain Lactobacillus acidophilus and gave it to mice that had also been infected with two models of colitis. When 13 days of treatment had passed, the new strain eradicated colon inflammation, and colitis had been hindered 95 percent. Associate Professor of medicine Mansour Mohamadzadeh at Northwest said: “ Such gene targeting in a probiotic bacteria such as Lactobacillus acidophilus offers the possibility of a safe, drug-free treatment in the future.”
NOVA probiotics: For a less affirmative colitis
The human gastrointestinal tract is populated with more than 400 microorganism species diversifying the gut ecology. Research in microbial ecology reveals probiotics serve as a balancing force against “bad” bacteria, provoking disruptive immune responses, therefore causing a variety of diseases. One of them is UC. Conventional medicine often treats the symptoms, not the cause. Probiotics attack the root problem of many illnesses. Why go for steroids and immunosuppressive drugs that sometimes leave one with undesired side effects? “This (the outcome of the study) opens brand new avenues, says Professor Mohamadzadeh, to treat various autoimmune diseases of the gut, including inflammatory bowel disease and colon cancer, all which can be triggered by imbalanced inflammatory immune responses.” A significant amount of research now piles the positive effects of probiotics in treating the symptoms of UC. Probiotics are the microscopic heroes of our health.
